If you're looking for an epic car camping spot in the Lake Powell area, Alstrom Point in Utah is a must-visit. We made the trip on December 25, 2025, and had an amazing time.
Getting to Alstrom Point is an adventure in itself. From Big Water, Utah, take the turnoff at N37° 07.837' W111° 24.867' (not the road before it, despite what Google Maps says!). The coordinates for Alstrom Point are N37° 03.593' W111° 21.783'.
The first 23 miles are unpaved, but a 2WD should be fine. The last 1.5 miles are tougher and require high clearance. The roughest part is just after the first lookout, with two gnarly tracks that off-road vehicles have navigated (you can check out the YouTube videos!). We found a milder route on the right, which our AWD Acura MDX (7.3" ground clearance) handled with my wife's expert guidance.
If you're planning to visit, be prepared for rough terrain. If you're unsure about your vehicle's capabilities, consider parking and hiking the last stretch.
If it rains recently, do not attempt this trip!
