We embarked on a 2-night backpacking trip on July 2, 2020, via Piute Pass Trail to Desolation Lake, and the scenery was stunning, particularly beyond Piute Pass.
After setting up camp, we hiked to a scenic viewpoint (N37° 16.703' W118° 43.453') for a breathtaking sunset photo, which showcased multiple lakes including Roget Lake, Blanc Lake, Lorraine Lake, Paris Lake, Puppet Lake, and Alsace Lake. This spot is likely ideal for sunrise as well, but be prepared for a challenging hike, including traversing rocky terrain and a 1-hour return hike in the dark.
On our second day, we summited Pilot Knob, a Class 2 climb that took 7 hours round trip from our tent. While strenuous, the panoramic views made every effort worthwhile. If you're in the area, don't miss this peak!
Our GPS track, "Pilot Knob.gpx," is available for download from the GPS Tracks Collection. Note that our descent route from the peak led to bushes, and we'd recommend retracing your steps via the ascent route if possible.
